The first of March.  The weekend is here, the skies are clear as we embark on another super Southern California weekend.  Sounds like the good old days at KMET.  Many people will tell you it was a sad day in LA when the Mighty Met went off the air.  The day that happened over 20 years ago, I was on the air.   I got the call from the station general manager, Howard Bloom that it was over.  Talk about feeling helpless.  I remember telling someone that when KMET went off the air it was like, the O falling off the Hollywood sign.

Here we are some 20 years later and another LA treasure is in jeopardy.  The good news is we can do something about it.

Please read this press release from City Councilman Tom LaBonge.

    PRESS RELEASE

COUNCILMEMBER LABONGE ANNOUNCES EFFORT TO ACQUIRE AND PRESERVE LAND AROUND ICONIC HOLLYWOOD SIGN

    Potential sale of Cahuenga Peak

LOS ANGELES (February 13, 2008) - Councilmember Tom LaBonge announced his plan to fight the sale by Chicago-based investors of 138 acres of pristine hillside adjacent to the iconic Hollywood sign in the Hollywood Hills. The announcement took place in front of the Griffith Observatory today.

Teles Properties announced today that five parcels in the Hollywood Hills are on the open market for $22 million. The sign, a worldwide symbol of the entertainment industry, is the City's Historic Cultural Monument #111.

The City has discussed its plans to buy the property with representatives of the owners. The City's General Services department appraised the property at just under $6 million in January. Issues of access and utility service have prevented the owners from developing on any of the parcels overlooking the 360-degree panorama of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.

I'm going to use all of my options to fight this and I'm going to ask the public's help and support, LaBonge said.
